Founded in 1924, Xinjiang University (XJU) is the oldest university in Xinjiang, with a wide range of academic disciplines offered at the university. Xinjiang University is recognized nationally as a comprehensive university and is one of the national "211 Project" universities (a system of accreditation for universities) in China. In 2000, XJU was listed as a comprehensive university for further development in the Great West Project of China. In 2004, XJU became a university sponsored by both the MOE and the government of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. With preponderant subjects in regional studies, XJU was chosen as one of project universities of USCO in 2010. XJU has three campuses covering an area of about 730 acres and buildings totaling 1,000,000 square meters.

History has seen various administrations established in Xinjiang. The Xinjiang region was under the rule of Xiyuduhu in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), the rule of Beiting and Anxi in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), administered by Alimali and Bieshibali Provincial authorities of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Imperial Government of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), after suppressing the rebellion in the western frontier, named the region "Xinjiang" meaning the new frontier area where a rebellion has just been put down, and set up the administration of Jiangjunfu in Ili. Xinjiang, as a province of China, was set up by the Qing Imperial Government in 1884. After Chinese Communist Party took over China (1949), Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was proclaimed in 1955.

Xinjiang, situated in the hinterland of Asia, has a distinctive continental climate characterized by drastic change in temperature, abundance of sunshine and low precipitation. In January, the coldest month, the minimum temperature averages below -20ºC (-4 °F ), in Hunggar Basin, rises to -10ºC in Tarim Basin and drops sharply to as low as -52ºC (-61.6 °F ), in Fuyun and Qinhhe area on the Junggar Basin fringes which are known as the coldest areas in China. In July, the hottest month, the mean temperature remain above 33ºC (91.4 °F ), in Turpan Basin, China's lowest area, and may reach as high as 48ºC (111.2 °F ),. Hence, Turpan is reputed as a "flaming place". However, the temperature is still below zero on the high mountains where permanent snow and active glacial activities are found.
XJU boasts for the beautiful environment and is close to the International Bazaar which is one of the Urumqi's national cultural and business centre. XJU stands between International Business & Trade Base and Western Region International Trade Base. It is also neighboring Bianjiang Hotel and the Bianjiang World Trade Base (centers for trade with Central Asian countries). XJU offers students convenient transportation and living conditions.
Located in north of Urumqi city and established in 1956, Xinjiang Medical University (XJMU) is a unique comprehensive medical university full of ethical endemic and regional character, including that of its predecessors, Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang Chinese Medical College. Approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 1998, XJMU has officially developed into a large and comprehensive medical university for teaching, treatment, and expert scientific research.
There are also 800+ international students, as well as 7,301 students studying at the School of Continuing Education. Xinjiang Medical University attaches great importance to the development of teaching staff and takes great measures in developing and strengthening them. The staff and teaching faculty is made up of more than 15,070 people, among them 914 are academic teachers and 977 are clinical teachers. There are 207 professors and 601 associated professors.
XJMU owns 2 key laboratories supported by provincial government and Education Ministry, 4 laboratories supported by the Xinjiang regional government, 8 key subjects managed by the Stated Administration of TCM, 11 key subjects at the regional level and 10 regional level research institutes. There are three mobile postdoctoral centers (Clinical medicine, pharmacy, and preventive medicine), 1 postdoctoral research station. There are also 27 doctoral degree programs and 53 master’s degree programs.
Moreover, XJMU has 6 affiliated hospitals containing 5,707 beds and 3 Non-affiliated hospitals. At present our techniques in performing liver transplants, in-vitro fertilization, lung transplants, heart transplants, kidney transplants, coronary artery bypass grafting, bone marrow transplants, PTCA (percutaneous translational coronary angioplasty) and other difficult operations are equal to international standards. There are 5 key subjects at the regional level, one key laboratory supported by provincial government and Ministry of Education, and 2 key laboratories in the fields of molecular biology and hydatid disease. There are also 10 research institutes at the regional level. Furthermore, with the support of more than 40 Hospitals for Medical Practice located all around the Xinjiang region, the XJMU offers medical apprenticeship in various fields with advanced research opportunities, which has been benefiting our students substantially.
XJMU is also recognized as one of the largest colleges in terms of international education in China. Initialised in 1992, the International Education Programme began to recruit foreign undergraduate students in a large-scale, most of who came from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Russian, Tajikistan, United Kingdom, Sudan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Korea. XJMU admits 150 new overseas students every year. At present, 560 overseas students are studying for their bachelors, masters and doctorate degree at XJMU. Students from all countries are all warmly welcome to XJMU.
Xinjiang university is the only university in Xinjiang that offers well-integrated development of multiple disciplines including Philosophy, Economics, Law, History, Sciences, Engineering and Management. XJU provides 80 undergraduate specialty disciplines, 8 master-degree programs and 153 master programs for professionals. Besides, it offers 47 doctorate-programs and 9 workstations for postdoctoral studies.
Currently, XJU has 2 teaching groups under the state level, 9 teaching groups under the provincial level. We have more than 1664 professional teachers including 204 professors and 599 associate professors. There are 352 teachers with doctoral degrees, 609 with master degrees among faculty in XJU. There are 85 supervisors for the doctorate students and 494 for masters students. At present, XJU has 1 academician of CAE, 35 academic experts have been given a special allowance granted by the national government. 5 experts have been given the title of "National Middle-aged or Young Experts of Outstanding Achievement", 13 have been honored with the "Regional Award for Distinguished Teachers", 14 have received the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Regional "Award for Excellent Experts", 2 have been admitted to the "National Talent Pool Program" and 7 to "New Century Excellent Talent Support Scheme" offered by the Ministry of Education （MOE）, 7 distinguished professors and 7 chair professors titled as the "Tianshan Scholar Award Scheme".
Xinjiang University consists of 23 colleges with more than 26,000 students enrolled. Among them are 19,000 undergraduate students, 230 doctoral and 3400 master degree candidates and over 500 overseas students. XJU possesses advanced teaching and research equipment and facilities such as multimedia classrooms, language labs and experimental high-tech labs. The modern library of XJU has been equipped with advanced facilities and owes a collection of about 2550000 volumes of books, plus more than 30000GB data sources. As well as the university has Gymnasium is a first-class multi-function Gymnasium in Northwest China.

XJU has established exchange agreements and teaching and researching cooperation relationship with over 134 institutions of higher education in more than 30 countries including USA, England, France, Germany, Russia, Japan and Kazakhstan.
XJU began to recruit overseas students in 1985, in order to the academic level and management of overseas students, and work on the international promotion of Chinese Language and International cooperative education; the XJU set up International Cultural Exchange College in January, 2008.
Chinese Language Program
In order to improve the Chinese language knowledge of overseas students, the International Cultural Exchange College of XJU offers language skills courses including reading, speaking, listening, and writing. It also offers students courses in Chinese liberal arts including Chinese Culture and literature such as Chinese Culture, Chinese Folk Customs, Chinese Cultural Geography, Business Chinese and Newspaper Reading. Students also have the opportunity to improve their Chinese language level and understanding of Chinese culture in other electives such as Wu shu, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper-cuts and Hand Made. Each year the college selects students to participate in short-term courses at local elementary and high schools and the Confucius Institute (a well known college for preparation of foreign teachers to teach Chinese).
International Cultural Exchange College now offers undergraduate program and postgraduate program at Business Chinese and Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSL). International applicants for degrees in academic disciplines other than Chinese Language and Chinese cultural studies, can also study at XJU and take related courses with local students. Note: Undergraduate program at Business Chinese can be directly enrolled without Chinese proficiency level, the schooling is usually 4 years. After the completion of the prescribed courses, a diploma and Bachelor's Degree of Xinjiang University are granted.
XJU is registered to provide and supervise the National Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) for overseas students. The International Cultural Exchange College takes responsibility for organizing the HSK examination for international students from all over Xinjiang. In recent years, the College has fostered a significant number of overseas students to take this exam, XJU students tops the list of this region.
The International Cultural Exchange College of XJU not only develops student's language skills, but also offers them opportunities to participate in various social events. Every semester, the college regularly organizes the multiple cultural and art activities such as writing, reading, singing, football contest and the talent show.
