Faculty of medicine at Tbilisi State Medical University offer 6-year medical program in English (US medical program & MD undergraduate) and in Russian language leading to Doctor of Medicine qualification. TSMU is traditionally the most popular medical school in Georgia.
Tbilisi State Medical University is one of the best medical Universities in Caucasus Region. TSMU was founded as Tbilisi Medical Institute in 1918 and became the Faculty of Medicine within the Tbilisi State University in 1930. It is rated number one in the whole of Georgia. The primary mission of the Tbilisi State Medical University is the preservation, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge; To provide academic programs, services, facilities, and technologies that support team-based learning and contribute to students' intellectual development and person growth; To coach and prepare students for job placement and career success, utilizing a network of professional and business contacts; To instill the importance of ethical behavior, responsibility, and professional standards. If we had to pick one word to convey what distinguished the University in the beginning, what makes it special now and what will remain its defining characteristic, it would be 'quality'.
Although the people in Georgia have their own language the university follows English medium for its overseas students. Among the list of countries represented are India, Armenia, Sri Lanka, United States of America, Nigeria, Ghana, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Trinidad and Tobago etc. The yearly fee for the university is $3500 at present which can be paid as two semesters from the second year onward. The university follows European Union syllabus which makes it simpler for the transfer students. The overall duration in case of the MD [Diploma In Medicine] course is 6 years which is divided into 2 years of basic, 1 year of pre-clinical and 3 years of clinical courses.
In each class there may be around 10-14 students and regarding the infrastructure of the classes. This gives a stronger Lecturer to student relationship. The classes are furnished and equipped with heating facilities to withstand the freezing conditions during winter. The university has a library which has collection of medical and medical related books in English and other foreign languages with reading halls giving students a peaceful place to study. There is also an additional computer hall with internet connection for any additional cross references. The university also holds yearly cultural meet for the foreign students separately which enables the students from different cultures to put forward their talents. There are also many conferences where many professors throughout the world visit the university delivering lectures to the student and thus giving them a wide exposure of their field.
US medical program of Tbilisi State Medical University is a 6-year medical program and joint project which has been developed and implemented with the cooperation of the Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) and Emory University (U.S. Atlanta) School of Medicine (ESOM).
The program is created in a way, that students pass the two steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) during the educational process. In addition, students are able to gain research experience and practical activities in the U.S. during certain stages of the educational process. The program boasts of basic medical, preclinical and clinical disciplines that are fully integrated.
US Medical Educational goal
The American program (English) is designed to train internationally competitive and competent, highly qualified physicians (Doctors) who are ready to postgraduate education and the specific training courses, both in Georgia and abroad (particularly in the U.S.). The medical cadres are prepared according to the requirements and standards of the country medical / public health care system and Emory School of Medicine (U.S.).
US medical Educational program includes:
Premedical stage: 2 years, the main goal is to give students a fundamental education in the sciences, such as biology, physics, chemistry, give the awareness of the Humanities, such as Anthropology, Art History, Journalism, History of medicine, History of Georgia and American history, Psychology, Communication skills, Cinema / Theater, etc.
Medical stage: 4 years, fully integrated and consists of 4 phases:
Foundations of Medicine: healthy human and human diseases;
Applications of Medical Sciences: provides students with basic knowledge of clinical medicine;
Discovery : includes structured time for students who have interests in the area of basic scientific studies or clinical medicine, health care management and organization, medical ethics, and other;
Translation of Medical Science: provides the opportunity for students to establish as a doctor;
Right from its start (on February 27,1918) the faculty of Medicine was under the banner of Ivane Javakhishvili State University. As the Council of Professors acknowledged the necessity of creating the independent Faculty of Medicine, by the decision of April 9, 1919 of the University Council, the Faculty of Medicine was separated from the unified Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and was established as the independent faculty.
On June 10, 1930, State Medical Institute of Georgia was opened, which has been called Tbilisi State Medical University since 1992.
English-Medium Medical Faculty was independently established in 1996 on Medical Faculty base. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 2006 on the base of the Faculty of Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychotherapy, Psychosomatic Medicine and English Medical Faculties.
