Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy is a university located in Chișinău, Moldova. Chisinau is the capital of Moldova. It is the largest city of the country. University Studies

The subject matter of the undergraduate level is to form and improve specialists in medicine and pharmacy with moral principles, knowledge and practical skills indispensable for qualified, competent and responsible practice of their profession, organization of the academic process, scientific research, clinical activity (diagnosis, treatment, prevention of diseases).

Studies are provided in conformity with national and international standards, which are recommended by the WHO. The process of training and improvement of medical skills is carried out in hospitals, and ambulatory units of the Republic of Moldova, research centers and pharmacies.

A Brief History

State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemiţanu” is a scientific, curative and cultural centre of university training, residency and fellowship training as well as continuous undergraduate and postgraduate education of doctors and pharmacists from the Republic of Moldova. It was founded on the basis of Institute of Medicine no. 1 from St. Petersburg, which was evacuated during the World War II in Kislovodsk and subsequently transferred to Chisinau together with teaching staff and students, under the name of State Institute of Medicine. The Institute began its activity on 20 October 1945, having only one faculty – the one of General Medicine, which assembled 32 chairs within which about 1000 students studied. Teaching was conducted by 130 teachers, including 20 Doctors Habilitates and 23 Doctors of Medical Sciences. Foundation of State Institute of Medicine from Chisinau served as an impetus for the development of higher medical education and consolidation of health system from the republic. At present, State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemiţanu” is a high educational institution of international fame that trains medical and pharmaceutical staff in conformity with modern and concepts and international exigencies of training and education of future specialists. Training is performed at the university level within the following faculties: Medicine No.1, Medicine No.2 (for international students), Dentistry, Pharmacy and Unit for pre-university training (for students- citizens of other countries); at post university level- within faculties of Residency and fellowship training, continuing Training in Medicine and Pharmacy and Department of Doctorate and Master’s degree. Training of staff is carried out based on modern programmes adjusted to European standards, with an emphasis on the most stable values, didactic methodologies and elements: tradition, advanced concepts, modalities of analysis and synthesis, level of discipline and attitude, modalities of reproductive and creative training. Integrated education, interactive methods, situation based problems, clinical cases and patient bedside services, evidence-based medicine, virtual programs, standardized patients, distance learning, learning during work process, telemedicine etc. University studies in the first years are carried out in Romanian, Russian and English. Within the Francophone Branch (since 1998), which activates in Faculty of Medicine no.1, studies are performed preponderantly in French. The Medical Scientific Library plays an important role in the training-research process of the University, adding up to more than 1 million of publications of books and other modern sources of information. The University is connected to Internet since 1997 and the University Center of Information “Infomedica” was established in 2002. The noble mission of educating staffs belongs to teaching teams of professors with a strong intellectual potential and a rich professional experience. State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemiţanu” has a well-equipped technical-material basis, which ensures all the domains of university activities. Over a period of 70 years of activity, the University trained over 40 thousand doctors and pharmacists, 7000 of them activating in Orient and Occident. At present, about 6000 students from the Republic of Moldova and about 32 countries of the world study at the Chairs and university courses located in 86 modern clinics and polyclinics. Development Strategy of State University of Medicine and Pharmacy ”Nicolae Testemiţanu” was developed with assistance offered by experts, national and international organizations in 2011-2020, which on 27 October 2010 was approved by Decision of Government of Republic of Moldova as part of the Development Programme of Medical and Pharmacy education in republic of Moldova. Subsequently, the Informatization Strategy of the University was developed in 2012-2015. The basic mission of State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemiţanu” is defined by the key role it holds in the reforming process of higher medical education, as well as health system from the country. Alignment to everything that is modern in higher education, further development and thoroughgoing study of research and innovation activities in medicine domain, rhythmic conduct of clinical work are the three components, which determine the current image of the University.


Students start their studies with pre-clinical courses where general subjects are taught. The curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine meets the standards of the curricula of similar faculties in France, Germany, Russia, USA, according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization and Association of Medical education. The faculty of Medicine uses problem based learning approach and tends to implement methods of evidence-based medicine in future.


Republic of Moldova maintains a visa regime with the majority of countries in the world.

The visas are issued to the foreign citizens by the embassy. For opening visa the following documents are required:

  • The travel document (valid for at least six months after the date of the expiry of the requested visa)
  • The latest photograph (35x45mm, 1.5′x2.0′) the filled in and signed visa application form
  • The invitation, presented in original and prepared in the established manner, issued by the Bureau of Migration and Asylum. The visa fee is 60 USD and must be paid directly to consular office.
The University offers the following study programs for international students
  • Preparatory Course (Department of Undergraduate Studies) – the duration of the preparatory course is 10 months. It includes the following disciplines: chemistry, biology, physics and Romanian language

After a successful completion of the course, according to the results of final exams the graduates are enrolled in the first year of study in Romanian language, or in English language (only after passing the English test).

  • Faculty of Medicine - courses are held either in Romanian, English or Russian. The duration of studies is 6 years. Communication skills of Romanian are necessary to interact with patients (students study Romanian language during the first two years).

Application Process

In order to be admitted to the entrance examinations, the applicants have to submit the following documents:

  1. A copy of the foreigner’s national passport valid for a period not less than one year
  2. Application form, submitted by the applicant
  3. A copy of school graduation certificate: Baccalaureate Diploma or its equivalent, a legalized translation of it into Romanian, Russian or English language endorsed with an apostil of the Ministry of Justice (Education) from the applicant’s country
  4. A notarized copy of the birth certificate

After, the all above mentioned documents are examined, the applicants receive an acceptance letter from the University, or the official invitation Letter, which is required at the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the applicant’s country, in order to obtain the Moldovan visa.

All the applicants who have successfully passed the entrance examinations have to submit the following documents:

  1. Joint letter request addressed to the Commissioner from the authorized representative of the petitioning school and applicant, using the school letterhead with dry seal
  2. Duly accomplished CGAF for Student Visa and Special study Permit
  3. Photocopy of passport pages bearing the bio-page, latest admission with valid authorized stay and Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) stamp
  4. Notice of Acceptance of the applicant bearing a clear impression of the school’s official dry seal
  5. Endorsement addressed to the commissioner from the school for the conversion of the applicant’s status, signed by the School Registrar
  6. Certificate of Eligibility for Admission from commission on Higher Education (CHED), in case of Medicine/Dentistry
  7. CHED Endorsement for transfer and shifting of course, if applicable
  8. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearance, if applicable if filed six (6) months or more from the date of first arrival in the Philippines
  9. Photocopy of BI school accreditation IF of the registrar or school representative
  10. BI Clearance Certificate
